Andrea Fernández Carrera, during her PhD studies at the Immunology Group, stablished that the inflammation generated in the peritoneal cavity is the main cause of fibrosis in patients under dialysis treatment. Moreover, the key of fibrosis development is the mechanism mediated by lymphocytes and macrophages.
She summarized all her findings in her thesis dissertation in February, 2018 entitled «Cellular and molecular mechanisms implicated in peritoneal fibrosis development» («Mecanismos celulares y moleculares implicados en el desarrollo de la fibrosis peritoneal»).
Her results are the basis for the development of a new dialysis solution that would be used to reduce fibrosis in patients under dialysis treatment.
